Deer Workshops for Rural Professionals

Knowing more about deer and how they are farmed may improve your services to the rural sector.

Farmers with deer are seeking advice to capitalise on good product prices and opportunities for increases in productivity.

This workshop is suitable for non-deer specialists involved in providing advice to farmers with deer such as rural bankers, agronomists, veterinary clinic staff,  rural accountants, rural service providers and others. Join us for a day of total immersion into deer farming that will help you or your staff.  

-    Deeper understanding of deer industry production and products, and deer farming practices

-    Get to know the nature of deer and their differences from other livestock species

-    Analyse real data and tour a working deer farm

-    Discuss issues and questions with other professionals and think about how you can contribute your expertise to improving the bottom line on deer farms.

-    Become armed with a resources directory

-    Develop contacts for this growing sector

The course is free of charge. 

The outline programme for the day is as follows:

8.30am - Presentations about the deer industry and farming practices

10.30am - Farm Tour

12:00pm - Review of farm tour

12:30pm Lunch included

1pm - Analysis of deer farm production and financial data

3pm General discussions and exercises

5pm Close with options for further learning

The workshop will include analysis of farm data. Materials and presentations will be supported by local technical experts in areas such as genetics, animal nutrition, environmental management, and the health and management of deer. 

This course may contribute to professional development programmes.  Attendance will be recognised by the deer industry and will be invited to future deer industry events to increase your contacts in this sector.

South Otago : Tuesday 11 August 2020: Balclutha town(Farm host Wistaria Co, Awamangu, Balclutha).

Manawatu: 19 November 2020. (Host farm- Laird property)

Canterbury: To be confirmed for early 2021.
