VelTrak™ coming down the line
VelTrak™ coming down the line
Good progress is being made with the roll-out of VelTrak™, the new electronic track and trace system that is being introduced in readiness for the 2021/22 velvet season.
Deer vets, velvet buyers and warehouses are the first cabs off the rank for VelTrak registration, which opens for them on 6 April. To prepare vets for this, DINZ held three well-supported webinars earlier this month.
DINZ chief executive Innes Moffat says all major velvet buyers and warehouses have placed their orders for the Zebra brand UHF RFID scanners that will play a key role in VelTrak. Farmers and vets do not need to buy a scanner.
Early ordering was needed so DINZ could negotiate a bulk price for the scanners and get them delivered in plenty of time for scanner operators to be trained. Delivery is expected in mid- to late-May, after which DINZ will hold hands-on operator workshops.
“The scanners are a significant investment for buyers and warehouses, so it is great to get their support,” says Moffat.
“VelTrak builds on the great work done by farmers to upgrade their sheds and freezers to comply with the MPI Regulated Control Scheme (RCS). It will also underpin the premium position that NZ velvet now enjoys in South Korea. It will enhance our reputation as trusted producers when marketing our velvet to health food companies in China, Taiwan and elsewhere.”
Behind the scenes, the artwork for the new VelTrak velvet tags has been finalised. A short video showing one of these tags being attached to an antler is shown below.
At this stage farmers don’t need to do anything with regard to VelTrak apart from ensuring they have a functioning email address. The action starts for farmers on 3 May, when on-line registration opens. Farmers will receive an email inviting them to register.
“If your deer farm, clinic or business is known to DINZ and you are designated as the main DINZ contact, registration instructions will be automatically emailed to you,” Moffat says.
“If you haven't heard from us by the registration opening dates, please contact DINZ. VelTrak registration will be needed for all businesses involved in velvet removal, purchase, warehousing, processing and export from the start of the 2021/22 season.”
Farmer webinars, hosted by Deer Industry News editor Phil Stewart and fronted by DINZ QA manager John Tacon, are now being planned. These will focus on how the VelTrak system works, the importance of applying tags correctly, and how to approve the new VelTrak electronic-VSDs.
Tacon says VelTrak will make life easier for farmers. “Farmers won’t need to record tag numbers, fill out paper VSDs or be required to have a scanner – all they will need is an email address and web access to approve eVSDs.”
